We had 56 in attendance from Southwest as part of the over 400 total to make Big Sky ’25 the best turnout for NAASF since about 1992!
Every day was a powder morning!! Most days, the sun added the perfect amount of visibility. You know it’s good when your race is delayed in order to slip new snow from the course.
The competitions started Tuesday with the giant slalom and snowboard races.
The speed freaks known as GS racers started at the top of the Hangman’s run. Rockwall, Texas is that states’ capitol of skiing because it’s also the home of our very own Amy Clark, who placed 5th in her GS race. Followed by the amazing Kameron Troy in 7th. For the B Team, we had Ryan Shelton salvage an 18th place finish after a DNF on her first run. For the guys, we witnessed the return of Kevin Vaughan with a 4th place finish and Bruce Powers finishing 20th. Our top finisher in the B GS was Fritz Moyer in his 15th place finish in a field of 50 where about 5 seconds separated the top 25. Dan Weiss and Ken McKean completed our B Team with 34th & 35th finishes.
The snowboarders were next after some delays. Our shredder from Neder(land), Kameron Troy placed 2nd with Traci Farley and Jenn Stefanac in fourth and nineth. Not to be outdone, Danny Caccia took the top spot on the men’s podium, with Matt Anaya taking the 6th spot. The Glen Campbell impersonator finished 14th.
Wednesday was the slalom events. But first, slip the course of all the new snow!
The lone women’s A slalom racer was Amy Clark with a 9th place finish. On the B side, we saw one of our newest members, Elayna Smithson take 4th!
But wait, there’s more!! In the men’s slalom squads, it was Kevin Vaughan with another 4th place finish in the A group. And Fritz Moyer, Dan Weiss and Ken McKean in 14th, 19th and 24th in the B’s.
It was at this point last season, after our Keystone Ski Week, that I began bragging about our overall points standings. I enjoyed a big dose of karma by doing that. And, I don’t mean the good kind of karma. I’m not bragging this time. I’ll just make notice that we’re currently the leader for the Shredder’s Cup with 134 points. AA, DL and UA have 88,85 and 84 points. Meanwhile, in the Bob Powers Cup, which is the standings of all A races, we’re currently in third place with 104 points. DL tops the list at a whopping 285 points, with AA close behind at 244.
Lastly, the NAASF Cup totals all competition points. We are in the 4th spot with 310 points, which is actually last place among division one clubs. DL has the top spot at 656 points, AA 549, UA 408.
There’s a big rivalry between Delta and American, they don’t even consider the other two division one clubs to be a threat. I sure would like for them to receive some of that “not good kind of karma” at the end of the season!
One thing is certain, we all had fun competing. Thank you to all the racers and supporters!
Our Team Dinner at the Cabin Bar and Grille was not our usual type of venue. It was nice to splurge. And we didn’t have to go very far for our after party. But, we usually try to avoid those $100 a plate restaurants. The photo above has 41 of us posing, (I’m counting the bear). Team Dinner at Steamboat will be much more affordable!
What’s up next?
We kind of shoe-horned our No-Brainer into our busy schedule. It’s just days away, Jan 21-23 in Brighton, Utah. I’m going and I hope you are too. Even if just for a day. Make it Thursday, Jan 22. We’ll be doing our “Lift Line from 9 to 9” skiing and riding all day then under the lights into the night. We’ll have warm drinks and treats, music and fun at our Brighton Beach tailgate party. That’s about all of the itinerary we’ll have. Gotta keep it “No-Brainer”!
We’re just 20 or so days until our next NAASF Ski Week at Steamboat. I’ll send out more info for both events soon.
If you’re going to Steamboat, REGISTER NOW!! It’s very important to register on the NAASF website before the deadline. If you register and pay then can’t attend, you’ll get a refund.
I’m forgetting stuff…I always do. Expect more info soon. Thanks for reading! We’ll see you in Utah!
