Steamboat review, Telluride preview

We’ve been up to our necks in Lenzerheide preparations. With that situation finally on the downhill slope, we can turn our attention back to our domestic events.
About 25 of us made it to Steamboat Springs, including several new faces. We didn’t get the usual “Champagne Powder” that Steamboat loves to boast about.. Our Ski Week started with some very wet conditions that turned every trail into a mogul skiers dream. My knees felt it for days afterwards!
The snowboarders started the weeks’ competition on Tuesday morning. Our dynamic duo of Kameron Troy and Traci Farley did their usual spectacular job on the course by finishing 3rd and 6th. Matt Anaya and yours truly finished 5th and 10th.
Our Team Dinner took us to a new venue in the resort. “Brick” was a cozy little place that offered up pizza and pasta dishes. And by invitation, the entire Breeze Airways Snow Team joined us.
Wednesday brought out our slalom racers. Our lone B women’s racer was Amy Clark. She managed a 12th place finish even after having a DSQ on her first run. In the A slalom, Kameron Troy finished in 8th.
Jason Prickett clobbered all but one competitor with his second place finish in the men’s B slalom. Our lone A men’s slalom racer was Bruce Powers rounding up the finishers list in 20th place.
Animated Characters was an excellent choice for the Wednesday night theme party. At the top of the Steamboat Gondola in the Thunderhead Lodge is always the best venue for the theme party too.
Amy Clark will readily admit that she prefers the giant slalom over the slalom. On Thursday, she proved it with a 1st place finish in the women’s B GS. Jason Prickett took 4th in the men’s B GS in a modified race day of a single run because of a new round of snow covering the race course.
Lots of new snow is always a plus when you want to ski or snowboard. Not so much when you’re trying to race down a steep GS course. The A GS for men and women were scrubbed for the week. The makeup race for the A GS will be held at Telluride.
The Ski Week coordinator was the delightful Mer Doessinger from jetBlue. It was her idea to host the Photo Scavenger Hunt that kept us all entertained and taking pictures all over the resort. I’ll bet that we’ll be seeing that event again.
Points standings.
We slipped a bit in the Shredders Cup. Or, a better description is that the Delta snowboarders “ollied” over us with a 54 point lead on our second place 206 points. American Airlines is less than 10 behind us too.
Our lack of A racers shows itself in the Bob Powers Cup standings with our current 4th place position. Likewise, in the NAASF Cup, our lack of all racers took its toll on us. We are currently in 4th place.
Delta is looking at a NAASF trifecta this season. They have a respectable lead in all three Team Cup standings. I mean, sure, we like them ok and all, I guess… Some of them are even considered our friends….I just like it…and them,,, better when we’re winning everything. We’re gonna need to bring a full Race Team to the final Ski Week in Telluride this spring.

The spring Ski Week always has a few extra fun events planned. Here’s a quick peek at the itinerary…
Sunday, Welcome Party in the Mountain Village
Monday, Race training followed by a Revelation Deck picnic. The best views in all of the San Juan Mountains. This is a “pack-in pack-out” event high in the resort. You’ll need to be comfortable on a black diamond trail to access this place. The views are worth it!
Monday night will be a Telluride Pub Crawl. It’s a scientific fact…you sing better and sound much better after a few drinks and during the last Gondola up to the Mountain Village! Google it!
Tuesday is the Snowboard Races. (The beginning of that points takeover that I referred to earlier)
Tuesday night is our Team Dinner. I eagerly await your suggestions as to where we’ll have ours.
Wednesday is the slalom races.
There’s no Wednesday night theme party this week….just kidding…The Theme is…”Beach Party”
NO MANKINI’s!! at the Telluride Conference Center, Mountain Village 7p-11p
Thursday will be the giant slalom races to include an extra race to makeup for the scrubbed run at Steamboat.
Thursday night will be our season ending Awards Banquet, again in the Telluride Conference Center, Mountain Village 7p-11p
Friday, we’ll start planning another summer trip to some far away place covered in Snow. I’d love to visit Argentina. Might as well stop by Chile on the way home too!
There’s still some gaps in the schedule. A few events that we normally see aren’t planned out yet. We’re missing the Tuck Party and a Poker Run if the schedule will allow it. I’ll update you with more info as I receive it.
If you’re thinking about joining us in Lenzerheide, Switzerland next month. I’m not saying that you’re on your own. I’ll just say that you’ll need to be prepared to find your own lodging. Time is running out to join us. There are literally only days left for you to make up your mind.
If this is your first Ski Club email, we all welcome you to the group. We hope that you’ll find us as fun and exciting as we sometimes think we are. Please feel free to email me with any questions, comments or concerns.
Thanks for reading!
